Poster Abstract

Introduction:

Air pollution is a significant problem that affects people and the environment. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) states that the levels of RSPM10 in the state of Karnataka, India is almost double the safe limit value. Other pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Sulphur dioxide (SO2) have severe health effects on the population, including increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Objective:

The main objective of this project is to use HPCC Systems®, an open-source big data analytics platform, for visualizing concentration of various air pollutants in real-time. Further, the AQI values at different locations in the state of Karnataka, India is calculated. Based on the AQI values obtained, the concern level of air is determined, so that necessary actions can be initiated. By addressing the challenges in data collection, integration, and visualization, we seek to provide a comprehensive understanding of the risks of air pollution and facilitate informed decision-making towards sustainable practices.

Methodology:

This project focuses on leveraging HPCC Systems to address the challenges associated with visualizing concentration of pollutants such as SO2, NO2 and RSPM10 in real-time. The first step involves collecting reliable pollutant emissions data from reputable sources and preprocessing it to ensure consistency and handle missing values. The preprocessed data can be integrated and managed efficiently, by using HPCC Systems' Visualization bundle that facilitates distributed file management and data indexing capabilities. The comparative visualization aspect enables side-by-side analysis of pollutants concentrations for different locations in Karnataka. Users can compare emissions levels, territorial contributions, and per capita emissions, by using the interactive visualizations created with HPCC Systems, to identify the best practices. By harnessing the power of HPCC Systems, this project aims to deliver valuable insights into air pollution patterns and trends, allowing for a deeper understanding of the sources, distribution, and impacts of pollutants largely.
